Peter Jensen on ‘Sunrise’

December 30, 2009

Just before Christmas, our Archbishop appeared on Sunrise. (See the clip here). He appeared to comment on Tony Abbott’s views about the place of the Bible in a good education. He was basically encouraging people to people to read the Bible for themselves, and that school is an appropriate place to be taught about it.

What I’m learning from Peter’s TV technique is how to get one’s message across and stay on the main point. His TV ‘opponent’ (and atheist educator) claimed that the Bible was full of ‘myths’ (of course she went to Creation as an example) and then sought to deride the ‘God of the Old Testament’. There was plenty of opportunity for Peter to correct her views and defend the Bible, but instead he chose to ignore the claims and stay on message, stating the positive reasons for studying the Bible.

Sure, there will be times when accusations should be responded to. However, in a 5 minutes TV spot (like in 5 minute conversations) he didn’t begin an argument but focused on his key point.

Lots for me to learn from.

Top 5 Singles – 28/12/09

December 30, 2009

Here’s the last chart for the year:

1. BURN YOUR NAME            Powderfinger (3 wks on #1)

2. FIREFLIES                             Owl City (-0)

3. ART OF LOVE                       Guy Sebastian Feat. Jordin Sparks (Re-entry)

4. BAD ROMANCE                   Lady Gaga (New)

5. BLACK BOX                           Stan Walker (-0)

I’m loving the more upbeat Powderfinger.

The toys on the ‘Fireflies’ clip are cool.

I’ll have a rant about the Guy/Jordin clip soon.

I think it’s time for me to embrace Lady Gaga.

Yeah, I’m not a fan of Aus Idol, but Stan’s song got stuck in my head, so there it is at #5. That clip also deserves a rant.

>>> Stay tuned for the top 20 singles of 2009 on The Ton chart!

Christmas Day thought – Carols

December 25, 2009

Merry Christmas everyone in the blog world!

My thought for Christmas day regards Christmas carols. With Natasha sleeping so badly, I’ve taken to singing Christmas carols to her while rocking her to sleep (If anyone from Tresillian is readying; yes, we’ve left her to cry, then gave her a pat, then repeat before I picked her up). However, it has been really lovely reflecting on the words of the many Christian Carols. Many particularly focus (appropriately) on the incarnation – God becoming human in Jesus. Not only does this enable Jesus to save humanity by entering into humanity, but also shows that we have a God who can relate to all that we go through as humans. He knows our fears, joys, griefs and delights. The verse below from ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ reflects on this. How I love relating and depending on a God who knows me and what it is like to be me.

For he is our childhood’s pattern,
day by day like us he grew;
he was little, weak and helpless,
tears and smiles like us he knew.
and he feeleth for our sadness,
and he shareth in our gladness.

Top 5 Singles – 7/12/09

December 9, 2009

1. DOWN Jay Sean Feat. Lil Wayne (2 wks on #1)
2. EMPIRE STATE OF MIND Jay-Z Feat. Alicia Keys (↑1)
3. BURN YOUR NAME Powderfinger (New)
4. MILLION DOLLAR BILL Whitney Houston (↓2)
5. RUSSIAN ROULETTE Rihanna (↓1)

It’s been a while since the last update on the charts. The debut of Powderfinger’s new single breaks the American domination of this week’s chart. I’m not a huge fan of ‘The Finger’ but this album seems more upbeat – more my style.

Only 3 more chart weeks to go before the top singles from 2009 can be compiled.

Moore College Golf Day #3

December 1, 2009

Last Thursday saw the MCGC head back to Massey Park. Defending champ, Bruce Pass, made a nine-hole appearance, while eight others sought to claim his title. It was the debutants Ben France and Chris Smith who battled it out for top spot, with Ben claiming victory by two points. In the teams event, Bidwell, Smith, Presland and Overhall also had a two point victory. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make due to illness in my family, but at least I had a legitimate excuse unlike “I’m getting married” or “I’m in Wagga” 😉

Here are the singles results and the handicaps for next round.
