St Matthias ESM – Sermon reflections

April 26, 2009

For all those at St Matthias Evening Church, here’s your opportunity to reflect further on tonight’s sermon on John 5:1-20. St Matthias Evening Church

The passage is where Jesus heals a long-term invalid man on the Sabbath. The man shows no sign of thankfulness  or willingness to follow Jesus as a result. In fact, he dobs on Jesus to the Jews when they accuse him of carrying his mat on the Sabbath.

In the sermon, I will suggest that the solving of our problems and sufferings in life won’t necessarily make us better people, let alone more faithful disciples of Christ.

Some things to reflect upon:

– Are there things in life that we think will make us better if we just have a problem solved?

– Is God making us more like Jesus by working through our problems, rather than always solving them?

– Do you think this was a valid application point to this passage?

– What do you think the ‘greater works’ that Jesus said he would reveal (John 5:20)? Hint – read the rest of the chapter.

– How will this view of Jesus change our view on our problems?

Read the passage again and have a think about some of those things and feel free to post your thoughts. Later in the week I’ll be post some ideas for next week’s sermon so some back and check it out.
